Taylor Leadership Academy is the first SUSD school to implement the Elementary AVID Program (Advancement Via Individual Determination). Teachers from Taylor and other interested educators/admin from Pittman and Roosevelt have dedicated themselves to 3 Saturday trainings for AVID strategies and implementation process. The AVID K-8 program will address and help to close the achievement gap and prepare our students for success in college and in the global society.

Read to Me, Stockton! 95206 Kick Off Event!
Taylor Leadership Academy hosted the Read to Me, Stockton! 95206 Kick Off event on March 2, 2012.
Read to Me, Stockton! is a project of the Mayor’s Book Club aimed at increasing school readiness and literacy in our youngest children, age 0-5, by mailing a free age-appropriate book directly to the child each month. Earlier this year, the project began working with the 95205 area. At the 95206 event, Mayor Ann Johnston shared the message about the importance of reading to children to over 250 parents and children who attended this event. Suzy Daveluy from the San Joaquin Public Library modeled to parents how to read “Green Eggs and Ham” and every parent was provided a Dr. Seuss book to take home to read to their children. We are very thankful to Ms. Guerrero, Principal of Taylor Leadership Academy for hosting the event and Board of Education March 2, 2012

First 5 San Joaquin and SJCOE Migrant Education for providing books for every parent in attendance. We also want to thank Art Coleman and the Chavez Jazz Band for bringing Read to Me, Stockton! to life with their beautiful musical arrangements. A special thanks is due to Ms. Lori Gray’s Kindergarten class for showcasing their spectacular rendition of a “Tribute to Michael Jackson” hip hop dance. Many agencies are working together to help our students succeed! What an amazing day!
